Wildlife Linkages

Connectivity for Wildlife’s research focuses on wildlife linkages and corridors. Gathering data on wildlife absence/presence and movement patterns is critical to providing these viable linkages.

Problems Associated with Fragmented habitats

High traffic roads cutting through core habitat can result in:

  • Restricting species movement
  • Reducing the population size through road kill mortalities. (Forman & Alexander 1998)

Research Objectives

Identify habitat linkages for multiple species using field camera stations and formal wildlife tracking
methods.

Possible Solutions to the Effects of Habitat Fragmentation

Corridors: maintain landscape connectivity by preserving habitat for the movement of species between
fragments. (Soule & Terborgh 1999)

Successful Corridor Designs:

  • Underpasses
  • Land Bridges
  • Culverts
  • Other Infrastructure
